322 NW 8TH AVE, PDXRYAN ALEXANDER-TANNER will look back at his career working as a cartoonist and illustrator working with a variety of clients, including the New York Times, the Nib, University’s Teacher’s College Press, Buzzfeed, UC San Diego, Talking Points Memo, the Washington Post, Intel, Planned Parenthood, the Portland Mercury, the Willamette Week, Dave’s Killer Bread and many more.
Ryan makes comics and illustrations by hand with pencil, ink, and paper. His work includes Muhammad Ali: The Greatest Comics Biography of All Time and co-authoring an adaptation of Bill Ayers’ book To Teach: The Journey, In Comics.

MICHAEL ALLRED is the legendary creator behind Madman, the Atomics, Red Rocket 7, X-Statix, and iZombie among dozens of others. He’s the founder of the publishing company AAA Pop. He’s won the Inkpot, Eisner, AML awards, and even an MTV award.MARK RUSSELL is the Ringo, Eisner, and GLAAD award-winning writer of The Flintsones, Exit Stage Left: the Snagglepuss Chronicles, Not All Robots, and Traveling to Mars. He is also the cartoonist behind Bunkbed Mishaps.

Celebrate five decades of groundbreaking art and storytelling with Portland legend Rupert Kinnard! In conjunction with his inclusion in the Northwest Museum of Cartoon Arts inaugural exhibit, we’re thrilled to present a screening of No Straight Lines: The Rise of Queer Comics.
This illuminating documentary traces the history of queer comics and the artists who reshaped representation on the page. Following the screening, Kinnard, creator of the first Black, queer superhero, will be onstage for an audience Q&A moderated by NWMOCA Board Chair Mike Rosen.
Rupert Kinnard will sign books after the Q&A.

Rupert Kinnard is an award-winning African American, gay, paraplegic artist, activist and is the creator of the political comic strip Cathartic Comics and the book B.B. and the Diva: A Collection of Cathartic Comics featuring The Brown Bomber and Diva Touché Flambé was published in 1992 by Alyson Publications. His recent book, Ooops…I Just Catharted! Fifty Years of Cathartic Comics was published by Stacked Deck Press in 2025.

BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS is the multi-award-winning writer of POWERS, ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN, DAREDEVIL, MASTERPIECE, PEARL, and many, many, many other books. He is the co-creator of two of Marvel’s most successful characters over the past 20 years, Jessica Jones and Miles Morales.TAKI SOMA is a Hugo Award-nominated cartoonist and writer. Her work includes ALIENATED, SINERGY, GALAXY MADNESS, THE UNITED STATES OF MURDER, INC., BITCH PLANET, and the autobiographical comic SLEEPING WHILE STANDING among many more.
MICHAEL AVON OEMING is the multi-award-winning cartoonist and writer whose work can be seen in dozens of titles across the past three decades, including HAMMER OF THE GODS, BLUE BOOK, THOR, THE MICE TEMPLAR, and (of course) POWERS, THE UNITED STATES OF MURDER, INC., and TAKIO.

ERIC POWELL is the International Horror Guild, Ringo, National Cartoonist Society, and multi-Eisner Award-winning cartoonist and founder of the publishing imprint Albatross Funnybooks. He’s most well known for his original creation, THE GOON, the all-ages series CHIMICHANGA and PUG DAVIS, has also dabbled in work for DC, Marvel, and Dark Horse, and the non-fiction story DID YOU HEAR WHAT GEIN DONE?

Lark Pien began making comics in the late 90’s, most of which are short fiction stories featured in anthologies, children’s magazines, and limited run publications. These she made primarily with traditional media.
Her colorist work is digital and includes:
- American Born Chinese, Boxers & Saints, and Dragon Hoops for Gene Luen Yang
- Stargazing for Jen Wang
- The Sunny Series and Turtle in Paradise for Jennifer Holm
- Dream On, and Diana Princess of the Amazon for Shannon Hale Invisible for Christina Diaz Gonzales

Lark’s art installations and comics have been featured at the San Jose Museum of Art, NYMoCA, the Portland Chinatown Museum, San Francisco Cartoon Art Museum and the Secession Gallery.
Her children’s books Long Tail Kitty (blue apple books) and Mr. Elephanter (candlewick) are adaptations from her handmade mini-comics.Lark’s non-fiction Immortal Chicken journals can be found on her patreon page, and updates for soft body workshops and internal art studies are posted on her Instagram @larkpien.

322 NW 8th Ave., Portland, ORKELLY SUE DECONNICK is an Alfie, Eisner and British Fantasy Award winner, won the Bronze Medal for International Manga from Japan, and received Hugo and Oregon Book Award nominations. Ms. DeConnick is a screenwriter, an essayist and a playwright, but considers herself first and foremost a comic book writer and collaborator.
She’s best known for reinventing Carol Danvers as “Captain Marvel” at Marvel and for the standard-setting WONDER WOMAN HISTORIA: THE AMAZONS at DC, though her NY Times best-selling comics BITCH PLANET and PRETTY DEADLY.
In 2015, Ms. DeConnick founded the #VisibleWomen Project, whose mission is to help women and other marginalized genders find paid work in comics and its related industries. The project continues to this day and in partnership with Dani Hedlund of Brink Literacy.

@ NWMOCAJoin us on Thursday, 12.4 from 6-8 PM for this FREE event! We’re welcoming Kacy McKinney to celebrate the launch of MOURNING ATTIRE, a book of comics poetry about love and loss.
Kacy McKinney is a self-taught visual artist and scholar/educator based in Portland, Oregon. She holds a Ph.D. in human geography from the University of Washington. She works in comics, drawing, illustration, and textile and garment design. After 15 years teaching in higher education, she recently launched Bushtit and is focused on work as an independent scholar/artist.
She is the creator of CHANGING THE NARRATIVE: STORIES OF STUDENT HOMELESSNESS AND HOUSING INSTABILITY (2022) and the follow up project EPILOGUE (2024). She edited and designed the comic book UPROOTED: VOICES OF STUDENT HOMELESSNESS (2024). Kacy is now working with artist Daren Todd and Street Roots on a project about street newspaper vendors. These community-based collaborative research projects use comics to build empathy to change how we talk, teach, and think about homelessness and poverty.
She is currently Artist-Scholar in Residence at the Homelessness Research and Action Collaborative at Portland State University. She has served on the Board of Directors of the Independent Publishing Resource Center and Sisters of the Road.
